Director
of Photography Mehran Salamati
JetCams'
award-winning Director of Photography Mehran Salamati is a veteran
cinematographer with credits that range from feature films to nationally
broadcast commercials to industrial and documentary camera work.
A member of the American Cinematographers Guild, Salamati has (in addition
to his work behind the camera) designed, fabricated and marketed a number
of groundbreaking products to both enhance "live" film work and increase
the accuracy of process photography.
One of his first projects was the design and fabrication of the first
nose and belly-mount camera systems for the Bell 206 JetRanger.
His subsequent work in motion control camera work for special effect
shots lead to the design and fabrication of the Salamati Productions
HotGears™ remote motion control system, which allows a camera operator
to both control and record camera movements in three axes. Utilizing
standard geared camera head wheels on the remote control unit, HotGears™ will
control camera pan, tilt and focus on a remotely mounted camera either
through cables or data link units.
Once the movements have been determined by the camera operator, up to
sixty seconds of movement can then be recorded into the HotGears™ memory
and played back to the actuators mounted on the camera head for precise,
repeatable movements on subsequent re-takes.
The HotGears™ units have gained industry-wide acceptance, having
been used in such diverse projects at the Star Trek Voyager television
series, feature films and both nationally and internationally broadcast
commercials.
Salamati's latest project is designing and fabricating the JetCams system,
which will feature a nose mounted camera with a high-g magazine and movement
as well as a 360 degree range of motion stabilized belly mounted camera
platform. The JetCams system Salamati has designed will accommodate standard
16mm and 35mm film stock, as well as IMAX and IWERKS 65mm cameras, and
all professional video formats, including HDTV.
